Reading Test Format

Academic Reading

  • Three long texts, which range from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical
  • Texts are authentic and taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers
  • Texts are appropriate for undergraduate or postgraduate entry level

General Training Reading

  • Section 1: Contains two or three short factual texts
  • Section 2: Contains two short factual texts focusing on work-related issues
  • Section 3: Contains one longer, more complex text on a topic of general interest

Reading Tips

  • Skim read the text first to get a general understanding before answering questions
  • Pay attention to keywords in both the questions and the text
  • Don't spend too much time on one question - if you're stuck, move on and come back later
  • Be aware of time - aim to spend about 20 minutes on each section
  • Read the instructions carefully - they may contain important information about word limits
